MIKE AND JESS' TRAVEL DIARY

Costa Rica Trip

Monteverde -Stop One November 17-18 2015

We landed in Liberia to begin our Costa Rican adventure down the west coast of the country. After renting our car, we quickly made our way to Rainbow Valley Lodge in Monteverde with a quick stop at a restaurant nearby.

The drive along the windy roads provided breathtaking views!

This lodge was chosen because it was just outside of town, overlooking the mountainous forest. The rooms and balconies were so incredible, it was one of the more unique stays we had in any of our previous trips.

The views from our patio

The primary reason we went to Monteverde was the famed Cloud Forest. We made sure to visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve for a day of hiking. The main parking area was large and had clearly-marked signs for the various trails available. The trails themselves were well-maintained and we never had a moment of feeling lost. The trails were so clear, I was actually able to do it all on crutches (a hell of a workout, though!)! One of the best spots for photos is on the red suspension bridge along the hike. If these views are not enough to make this a memorable walk, the trail ends at a hummingbird sanctuary!

From our pre-travel research, we knew we wanted to hit the Taco Taco Taqueria in Santa Elena. It was late at night and only the walk-up window was open. It was super busy with both locals and tourists alike, so we knew we were in for a great meal. We ordered some tacos, flautas, and local bottled beer and took a seat at the only open picnic table outside. The food was incredible and we still dream of the flautas.
