MIKE AND JESS' TRAVEL DIARY

Cruise to Alaska

Day 7 - July 2 2013

Juneau, Alaska was today’s port. We had a really full itinerary of excursions! We started our day with a fishing trip to catch salmon. The boat ride out was freezing but we had no issues catching fish that the group sends off to have our fish smoked and shipped to us in dry ice. While fishing, we got to see numerous Orcas breaching! Since we were on a tiny boat instead of the huge whale-watching ships, we were able to be closer to the whales, it was incredible.

The view from the boat. Unfortunately, did not catch the whale breaching on camera

As soon as we got back to land, we were off to our second excursion for the day! It was planned to be a helicopter ride to the top of a glacier to ride a sled pulled by huskies, but the tour company had to cancel that tour, but offered a helicopter ride to a different, more icy glacier and we accepted.

The helicopter ride was incredible with just us four and our guide. The views of the waterfalls and valleys below were breathtaking. The glacier was so fun to explore, this ended up the highlight of our trip.
