MIKE AND JESS' TRAVEL DIARY

Belgium Trip

About our trip to Belgium

Browsing flight deals often, Mike saw flights to Belgium from the East coast for only $350. We had just over a week of vacation time, so decided to book this spontaneous trip. Our previous trip to Europe, Germany and Austria, had us moving cities and Airbnbs quite often and so we decided to tackle Belgium differently. We would select the city we were most interested in and have that as our home base. Since the country is relatively small, we would take day-trips anywhere else we wanted to visit. Belgium has a robust train system, so no rental car needed on this trip, either!

We had to buy our tickets to the East coast separately, and the best we could get meant a day layover in Denver. Good news was, we had friends in Denver we wanted to visit!

When: December 2017
Why: We loved our previous trip to Western Europe and experiencing the Christmas Markets, so we knew we would also love Belgium in December. The chocolate and frites were the cherry on top!
How Long: 7 days
Most surprised us: How much we loved Ghent. Even after spending the majority of the trip in the city, we still wanted more time.
Most disappointed us: Bruges made us a bit sad. It has become so touristy that locals cannot afford to live in the city, so it has been stripped of it’s authenticity. We still had a great day-trip there, but would not visit again for the city itself.
Would we do it again: We would go back to Ghent in a heartbeat!
Would we recommend it: Each city we visited was unique had it’s own feel or vibe. We could recommend Ghent to anyone, Liege if you want to explore a city by foot, Bruges if you are looking for amazing photos, and Brussels for the big European city vibe.
