We slept in a bit later than expected (by we I mean ‘I’) but couldn’t pass up another chance for breakfast at Cotidiano.
We had plans to go to the Dachau Concentration Camp, so we got on the train to head to the city of Dachau, just a 30 minute ride northwest of the Munich.
Over 200,000 victims were imprisoned in this concentration camp over its span of 12 years. Over 40,000 innocent lives were taken. Among the grounds, memorials, and crematorium, a museum took the space of the main intake building where victims were subjected to public showers, delousing, and torture. The museum is huge and holds so much content, it took us four hours to complete.
You can tour the housing barracks, yard, and crematorium during your visit. We stayed until closing time and had to rush out and back to the bus.
It goes without saying visiting memorials like Dachau are a heartbreaking but incredibly important experience. We need to learn not only what happened, but how it was allowed to happen, so we can be aware and educated enough to not let history repeat itself.
After we got back into Munich, a couple beers were surely needed. We wanted to check out the Fondue bar/restaurant, Gärtnerplatz Alm, below our apartment because both evenings we walked past, it was very lively. On this night, there was a very large group celebrating something and we had a great time people-watching from a corner table as numerous guests gave table-standing toasts! The group were so happy and welcoming, one of the guys comes around with an entire bottle of vodka, pouring shots in everyone’s mouth and decided to include us!
A couple beers (and the generous vodka shot) went down easily and we needed something to fill our tummies, so we headed to Gaststatte Bergwolf for some late night wursts and pommes.
