After our late night, we didn’t end up rolling out of bed until about noon. We originally had plans to go to Neuschwanstein Castle, but that is at least two hours of travel each way, which was clearly not going to happen. Instead, we decided to see the areas of Munich we hadn’t explored yet.
First and foremost- we needed food. We headed to the outdoor market near our apartment, Victuals Market (Viktualienmarkt), which is also a Christmas market in December, for sustenance. We were spoiled with choices and decided upon pretzels, wursts, and roast pork. Let me just say, veggies were nowhere to be seen on this whole trip and we were A-Okay with it.
The Viktualienmarkt was our favorite Munich market because it had the widest range of everyday groceries to holiday specific items.
With full bellies, we wandered down to Karlsplatz to enjoy the Christmas market with an ice skating rink and plenty of shopping. I have no idea what this area would be like in other months, but it was a bit too crowded for us to stay for long. Had we been in the market (pun intended) for some serious shopping, this would have been the place to do it.
We continued the day by hopping through the many Christmas Markets around the city until it was time to stuff more food in our faces.
Dinner was at Gaststätte Burg Pappenheim for a non-touristic Bavarian meal. We tried Maultasche, an egg noodle dumpling traditional with German celebrations. If you ever see this on a German restaurant’s menu- try it! We didn’t see it outside of this restaurant, but was one of our favorite dishes of the trip.
After dinner, we decided to take a walk to the Christmas market at Sendlinger Tor, an old stone arch and tower. Naturally, we warmed ourselves with a steaming mug of gluhwein and checked out the market shopping. Exhausted from the miles walked on our last day in Munich, we headed back to the apartment, talking about how much we loved the city.
