MIKE AND JESS' TRAVEL DIARY

Germany and Austria Trip

Day 5 - December 10 2016

We woke up for one last breakfast at our favorite café, Cotidiano. After a gigantic breakfast, we split another schmalznudel at Cafe Frischhut.

Next, we decided to stock up on snacks for the train ride to Nuremberg. We walked to the nearby Viktuals Market to buy wedges of cheese, freshly-baked bread, homemade salamis and cured meats, and marinated olives. With forty dollars spent, we made our way back to the flat to get packed up.

Jess saw a stand at the market selling waffles, one of her favorite foods. Even though we had just eaten 4,000 calories for breakfast, she knew she may never get this chance again! Unfortunately, it was (as Paul Hollywood would say) “all style, no substance.” The waffle was old, dry, and cold. 🙁

After a couple hours on an inter-city train, we pulled up to the Nuremberg main station and began the 10 minute walk to our Airbnb, just inside old town. As we entered the old town area, we were surprised by the number of people. Trying to maneuver through the filled cobblestone streets was akin to walking through Disneyland on a weekend, made worse by the cumbersome luggage. This area had a very different vibe from Munich.

We met up with our Airbnb host and he showed us to the apartment we had the pleasure of staying in for the next few days. It was twice the size of the Munich apartment and absolutely immaculate. We dropped our stuff off and headed out to the Christmas market nearby, Christkindlesmarkt.

It was absolutely jam-packed, so after some time struggling to walk through the rows of stalls, we found a restaurant with a second-story balcony. The balcony table gave us the much needed room to breathe and an opportunity to sip on a couple drinks and watch the Christmas market scene below.

Sorry for the potato quality, but look how packed it was!

We grabbed a couple wurst sandwiches at one of the end stalls and wound down at the flat with the snacks we gathered in Munich.
