MIKE AND JESS' TRAVEL DIARY

Germany and Austria Trip

Day 6 - December 11 2016

Our plan for the first half of the day was to tick all the tourist sights off our list. First up was St. Sebald – Sebalduskirche Nürnberg, a beautiful cathedral in the center of old town. The walk to the Cathedral took us past the Christmas market, so we stopped for some early day market food. The market was so much more enjoyable in the daytime, compared to the night before.

We walked through some colorful streets on the way to the Burggraben, a well maintained path that was once the castle’s moat. It follows the city walls that line the northern half of old town.

The walking path was a highlight of Nuremberg for us!
The path spits you out through a tunnel near the castle

Halfway along the path, we exited the Burggraben to check out the castle that’s perched on the hill overlooking the city. You can explore the interior of the castle, it’s only a small fee. However, we instead wandered the castle terrace and to get great views of Nuremberg below.

After we took an obscene number of photos from the castle, we headed back down to take the subway to the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds in South Nuremberg. The museum was on location of the WWII Nazi Rally Grounds. The focus of the museum was displaying the many documentation artifacts and propaganda collected during and after the war. Downstairs, there was a temporary display of portraits and interviews with concentration camp survivors. This museum was certainly worth the train trip and small entrance fee.

The walk back to the train...look at how many crows were in the leaf-less trees...
So creepy! Totally thought of the old Birds horror flick while walking by

After a few hours at the museum, we made our way back to the city center around 5, just as it was getting dark out. We were starving, but as it turns out, it’s a Sunday and not much is open on Sundays. All of the restaurants were closed so yet again, we settled for Christmas market food. This was the first time it did feel like “settling” for Christmas market food. While it is a fun experience, you don’t get much variations on wursts and roasted meats, which we did get burnt out on.

While we’re very glad we visited Nuremberg, we didn’t like it nearly as much as Munich. It worked out well that our last day in the area is a day-trip to Bamberg instead of another day in Nuremberg.

At least Nuremberg has a beautiful train station!
