MIKE AND JESS' TRAVEL DIARY
Slovenia and Portugal Trip
Day 9 - May 12 2023
We woke up and were excited to spend the day exploring Lisbon. It’s hard to have a bad morning when your balcony view is this:
We started off with breakfast at Heim Cafe. It was really, really good. It will be difficult to try a different cafe for other breakfasts here it was so good.
The rest of the daytime was spent exploring the city. We walked and walked and walked (somehow everything in Lisbon is uphill, both ways) until our feet could not handle it anymore. Many pictures of our wanderings below.
We wanted to get the most crowded areas of the city done with today because we knew we would not want to go back. We walked a bit of the coastline and the Alfama (historic) district. Unfortunately, it is overrun with cruise ships and crowds. We wanted to get out of the area as soon as we could and be back to the less-crowded streets where we are staying. Especially coming from Slovenia, the over-tourism was shocking and a bit of a bummer for sure.
The city is gorgeous, however, and the locals are so nice. It feels so safe walking around and exploring. We are really enjoying ourselves so far!
While out and about, we had another super tasty meal at Cafeh Tehran for some middle Eastern grub.
After cleaning up from all that walking, we walked about 10 steps to Green Street, a street lined with restaurants that have decorated the walls with plants and flowers, hence the name. We decided to stay right next to this street because the majority of the food places we found were within a couple blocks! We decided on Acaso and were glad we did. It’s a tapas restaurant, very common here, so we got 5 dishes. House bread, Burrata with pesto, truffled cabbage on sweet potato puree, pork on parmesan risotto, and shrimp with garlic and chilies. The servers (owners?) were super friendly and funny and gifted us a shot of ginjinha, a cherry liquor they make here in Portugal.
