MIKE AND JESS' TRAVEL DIARY

Thailand and Cambodia Trip

Day 14 - December 14 2014

We packed up again to head to Koh Lanta by ferry. Another pier in which a hundred people are yelling at you, trying to get you to choose their ferry. We picked one and got on board. Only about an hour later, we are approaching the dense, green island. Koh Lanta is a less visited island with a more laid-back atmosphere, which we are ready for. Unfortunately, the skies were grey and it started to rain just as we were disembarking.

We are driven to Hidden Depths Diving Co to get fitted for our scuba gear for the excursion the following day. The woman that runs the front warns us that the weather is not looking good for scuba diving. She expects the tour we have planned will be canceled, but she lets us know we can go on a larger, safer boat (with more people) that will take hours longer to get to the areas we will be swimming instead. If the weather does seem to be rainy and windy as they are expecting, though, it will be much tougher for new swimmers. We decided it is not worth the money and probably not worth the hassle.

Our drive to the hotel is gorgeous. It reminds me of driving around in Hawaii again, as Krabi did. We passed tons of homes, large farms, food shacks, and some hotels scattered about. This is by far the least touristy destination yet.

We are lucky enough to be staying in a bungalow on the edge of the island, surrounded by trees, and with a view of the water. The resort has what seems to be its own private beach, beach bar and restaurant included. The water is ridiculously clear. We could stand with water to our bellies and still see the individual grains of sand between our toes.

After some relaxing and cooling off, we headed to a restaurant close by that had great reviews for its view. Sitting on a bluff, overlooking the beach and corner of the island, we enjoyed an awesome meal and drinks.

We finished the day with some cold beers on a beach bar.
