MIKE AND JESS' TRAVEL DIARY

Tokyo Trip

About our trip to Tokyo

Mike had been to Tokyo a couple times for a full day-layover on work trips to the Philippians, but Jess had never been. This trip was initially booked for March 2020 to go during cherry blossom season. Obviously, it had to be cancelled due to Covid. Finally, we revamped and rebooked our flights to Japan. Our original plan was to go to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. However, we wanted to do so much in Tokyo alone, we felt we would not be doing it justice by trying to squeeze three cities in one trip. So, we planned a much more relaxed, yet somehow still exhausting, two week trip in Tokyo!

Tokyo

When: October 2024
Why: We have never heard a bad thing about visiting Japan. Mike loved Tokyo when he had a couple days in the city. We LOVE Japanese food. We wanted to shop our hearts out. Why wouldn’t we want to go?!
How Long: 2 weeks
Most surprised us: How much we enjoyed the Disney parks. We are not Disney adults. We don’t watch Disney movies, we don’t but Disney merch. HOWEVER, when we were first dating, we went to Disneyland Anaheim a few times and really enjoyed ourselves. We hadn’t been to another theme park since then, over a decade prior to this. When we were researching the parks, we got more excited about visiting and it did not disappoint! It was fun to revert to our childhood except this time, we could actually afford to buy whatever food/gifts we wanted!
Most disappointed us: Breakfasts were really hard to come by, so we had to eat 7/11 snacks each morning, which we ended up loving. That’s all I’ve got. It’s an amazing city.
Would we do it again: We will be going back. 100%.
Would we recommend it: You’ve got to be ok walking A TON. You’ve gotta be ok with big crowds and obviously the language barrier. You get by with just a couple Japanese words, but most people don’t speak much English. But anyone that doesn’t mind those, absolutely. But, who needs our recommendation? Tourism to Tokyo has increased SO MUCH over the past few years, it’s not exactly a controversial opinion. 😉
